3D light is a basic tool in programs for creating 3D visualization that allows you to imitate with a lot of accuracy all kinds of artificial and natural light. The principle of operation of 3D light design is the imitation of photons that are scattered on a 3D model as well as in reality. This enables not only a favorable presentation of photorealistic designs, but also the achievement of a visual effect that shows the intended mood and atmosphere of the designed space. Thanks to skilled 3D light design, you can achieve spectacular effects of visualization and 3D animation.
Introduction to 3D lighting
3D light can be divided into different types, in our opinion, the most noteworthy are those that simply bring the most spectacular, natural-looking effects. When designing a comprehensive project, 3D light design will be based on the skillful selection of each of the types described below, depending on the scope and topic of the project.
One of the basic tools is HDRI map, which is to use 360-degree photos of the environment. Then, in the 3D environment, it allows you to reproduce the light 100% as it was in reality at the time of creating the 360 HDRI map. It works great in exterior and interior design.
The second important light mode is HDRI imitating light, called Clear Sky and Sun options. This tool allows you to imitate any time of the day, create the sky and sun to achieve the intended effect of 3D lighting. Necessary when designing 3D lighting in the exterior, but also in the interior, which have windows or other sources of natural light.
When designing artificial light in interiors, all kinds of spotlights, LEDs and bulbs, etc. should be considered. 3D visualizations also give the possibility of imitating illuminating objects such as a fire or a candle.
Why is 3D lighting needed?
Light has a giant impact on our well-being and the reception of space. A sunny morning, a warm, lazy sunset, or a cloudy pre-storm sky – this is nothing else than the sum of the play of light that evokes certain emotional states in us. It works in the same way in the case of 3D light design in architectural visualizations or animations. Depending on our intention, by choosing the season, time of day and lighting, we will receive emotions and associations. Another 3D lighting requires a romantic house with a garden by the lake, and another steel skyscraper in the city center.
The same works for architectural visualizations, models, and interior animation. When designing each room, the atmosphere of the space should be specified – the bedroom will look differently illuminated by the morning sun rays, and differently in the evening with the dimmed light of the lamp.
How is 3D lighting used?
As in reality, any light you design must have a source. It is one of the basic principles of 3D light design, thanks to which the project can achieve a professional photorealistic effect. Even if the light source is not on the visualization, it must be clear where the light is coming from, whether it is natural or artificial etc. Each type of light can be successfully imitated.
3D light design is quite easy to use once you learn the basic principles of design, which we teach during our training. HDRI maps are perfect for outside and inside with artificial light. During our training, you will also learn how to create lighting with rich variations of atmosphere and moods using lightmix, based on one image, without the need for re-rendering.
